Administrative History

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Ordinance makes provision for a dean to head each school of the University. The Office of the Dean of Science was established in 1988, with the appointment of the first dean. The Office reviews and oversees research and instructional activities of individual departments within the School, and also has administrative responsibility for some research centers.

Scope and Contents

The records consist of publications, correspondence, memo, circulars, agenda and notes of meetings, which were produced since 1990. They provide information about development of academic programs offered by departments of the School, and School's policies on academic matters.

Restrictions on Access

Except for pubications and other materials clearly intended for public circulation, these files are closed to public access for twenty-five years. Records containing personal data are closed for seventy-five years.

Series 1 - Administrative Files, 1990-

This consists of selected files from the administrative records maintained by the Office of the Dean of Science, which have been arranged in accordance with an alpha-numeric filing system developed by that office. (A copy of the filing guide has been retained by the Archives).

This series consists of correspondence, meeting minutes, discussion papers and other materials generated by internal or advisory committees of the School. The records mainly document the curriculum development and quality control of programs offered by various departments of the School. They also provide information on admission, department planning, budget, research collaboration and conferences, policy on course grading and course evaluation. A few documents reflect the university's policy on general education.

Series 2 - Publications and Printed Materials, 1994-

Arranged alphabetically by title.

This series consists of annual "status reports", conference proceedings and other printed materials issued by the School of Science. These publications provide information on faculty, research projects, and programs offered by the School.

Series 3 - Audio-visual Materials , 1996-

Arranged alphabetically by title.

This series consists of audio-visual materials which are mainly recordings of distinquished lectures organised or co-coorganised by the office.

Series 4 - Posters, 1992-

Includes posters of school events.
